    starting problems!!!

    hhhheeeeeeeellllllpp!!! help me please someone!!!!

i have a bolwell sym (jive i think!) 50 cc which is having starting problems.

they started a few weeks ago and sometimes nothing would happen when i pressed the starter, i would move the bike forwards a bit and then try again and it would turn over.

now it wont start at all, al that happen is it makes a click sound when you press the starter, i have taken all the body off and found the part that is clicking, its an electrical connection thingy!!! (im not very technical!!!) if i replace this thing  will it start, if so i can just go to show n go and ask for the part!!!!

     thanks in advance folks

Hey Steve, have you tried kick starting your scoot? Does it run ok otherwise?

Sounds like a flat battery to me. If the battery is flat, it will often make the starter relay "click" but the engine won't turn over... Pop the battery on the charge if you have a charger. If not, a dealer might be kind enough to pop it on the charge for you. While you're at your dealer, buy some two stroke oil so you can make sure your two stroke oil bottle is topped up.

Failing that, it could be the starter motor or starter relay (that connection thingy you found), but my money is on the flat battery....

Let us know how you go

    thanks for reply

it kick starts ok and runs well otherwise

dont think it is battery as horn/indicators lights all work, 2 stroke is topped up

might see if i can get a starter relay and go from there, dont suppose they will be too expensive! do you know best place to use????

    thanks

Yeah, ok. Might be the starter relay then or starter motor. Hopefully it's the relay, but it sounds suspiciously like the starter motor! When the motors become old and 'bind up', the relay will often click but nothing happens.

Your local SYM dealer should be able to get a relay fairly quickly for you, I would think somewhere about $50 to $60 depending on freight. In Adelaide I think it's only Show-n-Go...

If possible, get your scoot to a mechanic so it can be diagnosed. You'd hate to buy one part, only to find it didn't fix the problem...

    take the starter motor out and take it to an electrician,it probably only needs a service{brushes,bushes etc}

Manuals aren't available to purchase, there might be one in the download section of this forum.

The starter motor is a little goldy looking cylinder thing, near the front end of the transmission. It's about the size of a small tub of Yoplait. You'll need to remove a body panel or two to access it, then it un-does with just a couple screws.

But to be honest, if all this mechanical stuff is foreign to you, it might be best to take it to a mechanic. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for 'informed consumers' but this might just be beyond you ability at the moment...
