    Just got the Vespa back

Hi it has been a while since I posted. Sorry. I have been lurking though and check the forums every few days.

i just got my little red back after dropping in my drive way. I didn't do that much damage but insurance was called on. This was a very long process, which was due to insurance and dealer issues. I don't blame either as I was out of the country a bit as well. I will tell you it took about 8 weeks to get it back.

i am happy with the work done and got it serviced while it was there. They did forget to put a new front tyre on as requested. But as I said it was some time a go when I mentioned it.

On the way home though the scooter stopped running twice, which was very scary on the Main roads of Sydney, just after the harbour tunnel was a memorable moment. It started straight away both times. It also lurched a few times, power went off before coming back on. Anyway rang the dealer and they suggest putting some new petrol in it as the fuel may have gone stale. I haven't had a chance to do that yet.

What is obvious is that I need a closer repairer than lets say the northern beaches as I live in the Sutherland area. Can anyone recommend a mechanic on my side of the bridge? Maybe inner west or city is still better for me than northern beaches. I am happy with the service that I have had, just don't want to travel that far and have something to do while I wait. Cheers

Re: Just got the Vespa back

Went for a 20 km ride today to check the scoot. It behaved well no stalling or power drops. I tried to replicate the conditions of the other day but, was able to get up to the 80km/h for long enough. I am now wondering if it was the efi remapping itself after not being ridden fo a while.

Anyway good to have it back, now I need to get a longer ride to make sure it is all ok.

    cheers

Don't know about your stalling problem, but as far as mechanics go, Scooterworld aka Close Motorcycles in Redfern are pretty ok. They are on the corner of Regent St, and Cleveland St. Still a bit of a trek for you, but at least on this side of the bridge... and easily accessible by train if you need to leave the scoot there.

Thanks for that martindemo. I think I will give them a go.

Took out the Vespa again today and I am happy to say that there was no sign of stalling. I flicked the engine cut off switch a few times, just in case that was the issue. A number of forums suggest that a similar issue can occur if the battery is not holding its charge, so something else to think about.

It is great to have my Vespa back, we are starting to reacquaint with each other.

I choose to take my Vespa to Sandy at SS Scooter Engineering.

He specialises in older models, but does great work on my 2009 GTS 300.

And he's based in Alexandria not far from Redfern station.

Yes in the east there are a few scooter dealers you can choose from. All these shops will have access to any big brand parts.

    Scooterworld Redfern

    Racecourse Motors Randwick

    Cyclecraft Bondi

Re: Just got the Vespa back

Hi again. It has been a while. Well the scooter has had another problem. The engine light would come on when under power and then go off at idle. It took me ages but I took it over to Sandi at ssengineering. He thought it might be the oxygen sensor and replaced it, but that wasn't it. He then had an idea that the Jettin exhaust might be the issue, but wasn't sure as he couldn't get a diagnostic error reading as the light went out at idle. I put the stock exhaust back on but it didn't solve the problem. Anyway after reading about lizzy's issue on this forum and similar issues on modern forum I bought a regulator on eBay.

Well today I dismantled the Vespa and replaced the regulator. It was not an easy job, putting things back together was even harder. Particularly the glovebox. What a hassle. I thought I got it back together without issue but then noticed a small crack in the corner of the floorboard.

The test drive showed no engine light issue, so I guess it worked. However, I must have done something to the cable running to the lock of the seat as it doesn't lock any more. The manual release is very tight so it is caught somewhere. I am not inclined to take it apart again so I will have to live with no lock for a while.

antway if anyone has any simple solutions please let me know.

    cheers

I got the chance yesterday to have a longer run through the national park. I can report that the engine light issue was related to the regulator and the new front tire was a great idea.

Re: Just got the Vespa back

I sympathise with the GTS glovebox- it is a massive pain in the anus. It actually requires you to have 3 Small hands! Unfortunately, that glovebox needs to come off again- the seat cable release has a habit of flipping sideways behind the glovebox. You need long thin designers hands (or some kind of implement that I have yet to imagine) to reach in through the left knee pad during reassembly to keep it pointing forwards. Also, you will have noticed a rubber band holding back a black plastic lever below the ignition lock, it needs to be there to hold that lever behind the glovebox latch during reassembly or you can't open the glovebox! I improvised and used some blu-tac to hold it against the steering column.

Don't worry, the GTS can take it. In the time I had my GTS250 I mowed down a pedestrian, fitted loud horns (behind that glovebox), had it knocked over by a car, pfaffed with various Dr. Pulley weights (a mix of 10 and 11g worked well on the 250, the 300 I dunno) fitted a PM Tuning muffler, then refitted the original when I got over the noise, and basically rode the *** off it everywhere. When I traded it at 30,000km it was barely run in. I have since seen it around town with some extra chrome and bling- and the new owner loves it as much as I did.

Re: Just got the Vespa back

    Thanks for the information fluffy.

Got it fixed, I am better at taking the glovebox off now. Flew through it this morning. Found that a little black nodule thing had come out of its spot behind the manual release popped it back in, but still didn't lock properly. I had read that the lock can drop a bit, so I took it off and added a washer and that fixed the rest of it up.

I put the glovebox on twice, as I didn't fix the problem straight away. I can say that I got it on both times with a lot less problems than before.

Thanks again fluffy, that information about the cable was what I needed to address.

    cheers Garrett
