    Iron Butt Scooter insanity

Ok folks, time to toughen up and do some serious touring!! May 2-5 is the Iron Butt Association International Scooter 1000 Insanity Weekend!!

    http://www.ironbutt.com/scooter1000/

For anyone who is interested, the Aussie version is 1610km (also called the SS1600K). I have done an SS1600K before and its no easy task.

Unfortunatly for me, I will be bobbing around somewhere in the South Pacific Ocean that weekend, so I cant participate. But if I can find a cheap Scoot somewhere I might even make one of the upcoming FarRides as Scooter 1000 Insanity!

    Hope we see some takers!

Eep. That's a long way. I've been considering doing 1,000K in a day, but there's no way I could do a thousand miles.

4 years and 20,000 K's later, I'm still scootering, and you guys are stuck with me!

I think the last 1600k I left Brisbane at 11am and arrived in Malacoota (Victoria) at about 7am, so with daylight savings that is about 18 hours (daylight savings included). I had 4 hours rest then rode back to newcastle, so did about 2500km in 36hours! I have the spreadsheets here somewhere if anyone is interested.

I think I would need a 250cc scoot to do the challenge. I am havy weight, 100kg and not sure that I could sustain 100kph on a 125cc. Advice welcome.

I wish there was something like that in NZ. I have tried to drum up enthusiasium for longer rides on scooters here but no takers yet.

This weekend, I have time off and had planned to leave at midnight and just ride. No set goals, just go through the night and see where I end up. I'd love to aim at 1000k in 24 hours. I had planned to take a bivvy bag and catch a quick nap early afternoon in a rest area somewhere.

Unfortunately the quarterly insurance premium has come in so thats the petrol money gone. ( thought it was due next month ).

I have done 630k in a day and felt I could've gone further. but at the same time, was glad to get home. when I did.

The FarRiders forum actually had a lot of good general advice for long-distance riding. Unfortunately they've locked it up as complete members-only access now. :/

I've mentioned it before here, but I managed ~780kms on a Postie once.. Unfortunately electrical issues nixed the attempt. And I thought the 1000km CT110 guy did it as a circuit thing?

Wear loose clothing. Have plenty of sunscreen on your face and any other exposed parts (and lip ice). Have water easily accessible.

I'm sure others can come up with a hundred more tips for long rides.

Thats good going on a Postie. Couple of FarRiders have done SS1600K's on posties.

If you want to see the FarRiders stuff on the forum, you can join the forum. I think the only sections you wont see is the Spot Tracker Links and personal details (until you have a number anyway). They were getting to smashed with spammers. The IBA website also has plenty of good info.

I dont have to worry about sunscreen, I am covered head to toe with safety gear!

But really, Iron-butting is Doing It Wrong™. It's a s*** way of touring a country.

1600kms of ...this is a waste of petrol.

Well, I must be doing something wrong...

I participated in the Iron Butt Scooter Insanity a few days ago, riding 1871km in the 24 hours on my new (for me) 2007 Piaggio Xevo 250. The scoot performed brilliantly.

Unfortunately I had a flat rear tyre that cost me a few hours to sort out.

I'm one of the FarRiders and I've ridden my Postie 1600km in a day.  Snail

    Re: Iron Butt Scooter insanity

I was disappointed with the flat tyre during the IBA Insanity ride. I just knew the scoot could have done better.

Yesterday I went from Newcastle to Bourke, down the Kidman Way to Darlington Point on the Sturt , over to Gundagai and back up North past Newcastle to Coolongolook.

Flawless performance by the Xevo 250 for a 2201km day.
