    2017 first quarter sales

Sales figures compared with first 3 months in 2016 overall sales down by 13.4 % scooters down again with a whopping minus 22.3 % when or how will it end ? . No breakdown charts yet but will post when they come to hand

The national motorcycle market suffered a 13.4 per cent decline in the first quarter of 2017 compared with the same period in 2016 according to the latest sales data published by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries.

Sales for the 2017 first quarter totalled 21,794 compared with 25,160 for the same January – March period in 2016. The 2017 sales tumble comes after a busy 2016, in which the industry recorded its best annual result since 2009.

Both the road and off-road segments recorded declines during the first three months of 2017, with road bikes down 15.5 per cent and off-road down 15.3 per cent. The ATV/SS market showed only a small drop of 1.3 per cent.

Scooter sales, which have been in slow decline for several years, also fell 22.3 per cent.

Harley Davidson retained its top-selling status overall among the road bikes with 2,261 sales for the first quarter, followed by Honda (1,943 sales) and Yamaha (1,455).

The top-selling manufacturer in the off-road category was Yamaha with 1,734 sales. It was followed by Honda with 1,467 sales and KTM (1,393).

Polaris led the ATV segment with 1,244 sales. It was followed by Honda with 908 sales, and close behind in third place, Yamaha with 845 sales.

Piaggio remained top-seller in the scooter market with 293 sales. Second place was taken by Vespa with 240 sales, and Honda third with 198 sales.

Scooter sales Sad why so bad few ideas , fuel prices too stable , perceived as uncool ,  too expensive ,  motorcycles more features for less money , wrong models brought in to Aus . too hard to get a licence , servicing cost compared to small car , Australian weather & long distances , were getting too soft ??? you tell me Confused

Hmm Interesting maybe alternatives to scooters the Grom sold 294 units the CB125E 140 units down from 192 units from the previous year

Harley dealers must be licking their lips over sales successes. When I passed the Harley showroom in Alexandria last week, on the pushie, I called in to make an equiry about the Street Rod 750 only to be told that they are experiencing a high level of enquiry for this bike. The promo video for this bike is a tad rad.

I think weather isn't helping. In Sydney it's been raining basically every day for the last eight weeks (or that's what it feels like anyway)  - who's going to buy a scooter here?

    Just a thought........

I notice one thing in both Scoots and Bikes.......

TOP of line units have picked up in sales....In bikes, it's Harley , and in scoots it's Vespa 250.

Both are top of line in their fields.

Does this show perhaps a maturing of the market-and I mean that in both ways  ie. folks wanting to move on to quality items and /or folks getting older and spending the children's inheritance on toys?

Good observation perhaps the hard core scooterist or cruiser fans are not dropping away and still buying (especially a new model HD for the cruiser fan )
