    Vespa is an Italian line of scooters manufactured by Piaggio.

    The Vespa has evolved from a single model motor scooter manufactured in 1946 by Piaggio & Co. S.p.A. of Pontedera, Italy — to a full line of scooters and one of seven companies today owned by Piaggio — now Europe's largest manufacturer of two-wheeled vehicles and the world's fourth largest motorcycle manufacturer by unit sales.[1]

    From their inception, Vespa scooters have been known for their painted, pressed steel unibody which combines a complete cowling for the engine (enclosing the engine mechanism and concealing dirt or grease), a flat floorboard (providing foot protection), and a prominent front fairing (providing wind protection) — into a structural unit as well as a singularly endearing and enduring shape.

    As the first globally successful scooter, the Vespa has enjoyed prominence in popular culture and has come to symbolize stylish personal transportation.

    Yes, It's Italy. But some bogans will say they are made in Idelly, or wogland.

    Vespa is Italian for wasp. Junk is Chinese for "scooter"

    The only reason why i asked, is beause i thought i read they might have been made in China, But as I can see, I'm mistaken. Thankyou for the advice, Dean

    That would probably have been written by someone that doesn't sell them (but probably wishes that they did).

    Vespa envy is a terrible thing.

    Ghost Who Walks - if you get a chance go and see one.  I'm sure that you'll have no problem getting the owner or dealer to wax lyrical about them for as long as you are prepared to listen Big Smile

    Compared to what ?

    I guess it depends how much you value build quality,  a steel body and the Vespa name....  to me it's comparable to the Sportscity and there is only $400 difference.  Vespa is considered by the market as a premium scooter,  as with any premium product you have to pay more.

    $ 5,990 - Aprilia, Mojito 125

    $ 5,990 - Vespa, LX 125

    $ 5,590 - Aprilia, Sportcity 125

    $ 4,990 - Aprilia, Scarabeo 125

    $ 3,990 - Piaggio, Liberty S 125

    $ 3,490 - SYM, Mio 100

    $ 3,099 - SYM, VS125

    Re: What country makes Vespa

    Ive had a 125 for six months and Im beginning to scan the landscape for a good 250+ so I can do some touring. The maxis aren't my cup of tea. Possible contenders at the moment are the Honda SH300 the Derbi 250 GP1 the Aprilla Sportcity 250 and the Vespa GTS 250 & 300's. I havent ridden any 250's yet and that will be the next thing on the list. Im looking for reliability and good handling more than looks.

    Re: What country makes Vespa

    My son (Motorrad) travelled around 50,000km on his Vespa GTS250 over about 10 or 11 months without any kind of problem, just normal servicing & tyres.

    Most of his rides were 900km each way,  to me that speaks for itself,  in terms of reliability,  suitablity of Piaggio engines for high speed touring and comfort.

    The Honda SH300 seems to also building a very good reputation overseas,  I noticed the sales in Italy were very high,  remember it was designed and is built in Italy.

    In my case,  I will be buying a new Vespa (still undecided on which model) later this year.

    Compare a 20 year old Vespa with any other 20 year old scooter and I think that you'll have your answer.
