    Weak headlight - electrical problems?

    Hello,

As a newbie, i'll fire away my first question! I tried to search for it but found nothing... :-)

Anyway - i've recently bought my first vespa (lx50) and suspect that it has some technical/electrical failures. The headlamp, aswell as the backlight is weak when ideling and when driving. The breaklights, direction signals (?!) and horn works well.

I suspect that this might be kind of a serious problem - does anyone have any thoughts on this i'd be more than thankful!

     Regards,

    Carl

Is it flickery upon idle and then strengthens as you accelerate?

    If so this is normal.

hmmm... not flickery, really. Just weak. If it is was a torchlight, driven by a batter - i would say the batter was running out.

You didn't say whether your Vespa is new or used.

The head light on my scooter (a Bug Bandit) will initially remain bright when stopped but after a minute or so,  it will gradually dim until I take off and get the rev's up again.

As I understand the electrics on most scooters,  it is the magneto that is the primary source of electricity for the headlights,  and at idle the magneto is not rotating fast enough to keep the headlight bright.

...sorry, the LX50 has about 1800 km on the meter.

the headlight never gets that bright, even when the engine is rev'ed up.

     Hmmmmmmh

    What's the battery like ?

Do you only every use it for short rides ?    (longer rides tend to charge the battery better)

Anyway,  I probably get it checked by a Vespa mechanic to make sure the magneto and the voltage regulator are all working properly.

Lots of small scooters have very weak lights, particularly headlights, you could try replacing the globe, on my (now sold to fund the scoot) nissan pulsar, I bought replacement globes of the same wattage but that were signifcantly brighter, they were 'Narva +50' I think.   The supply of electricity may be your issue but these globes made the car lights noticably better.
