Well at least it's dry out that way. Light rain at MonaVale at the moment, the four tragics that made the meet are waiting a bit longer for it to clear.

Well it did finally clear up, so three of the usual suspects and a newby to NBSC eventually set out for a short run to PITS at Cowan. A pleasant little run despite the partly damp roads early on. A big welcome and a great pleasure meeting Jan and his tidy Aprilia 125.

(Smugmug is behaving again, so finally the requisite pics. Smile)

Re: Sydney We Ride Coz We Can: SAT 26 SEP. The Oxley

Had a great 500k ride today, up the Oxley to Walcha and back, on the Bonnie. was supposed to be a Ulysses ride but due to 2 days heavy rain and showers n drizzle this morning only one other rider turned up, but in respect to Eccles's pearl of wisdom, "if there is any chance of it clearing… we'll ride”,  the two of us headed out into the mist.... and had an absolute corker of a ride, dry roads all the way. Got to Walcha, had an excellent burger at the Royal gassed up then turned around and re did the ride in reverse. Geeze this Oxley is an epic road, especially twice in one day. It has to be one of the best riding roads in Australia, its got everything.

Re: Sydney We Ride Coz We Can: Clocking up more K's

    Rod Fountain:
Have you been to the Ellenborough falls through Elands and Bulga
No, I'll look them up. I thought the road to Ellenborough Falls was gravel.

I've just done a return trip to Sydney and back, another 1,000ks in two days. Eccles knew I was coming south and decided to ride north to escort me in. Was dodging showers all the way down but because I got kitted up in my wet weathers I didn't get rained on.

As I was waiting at the roundabout at Heatherbrae I saw Eccles crossing it from the other direction, We laughed when Eccles commented that we've must have been riding together too long if we can cordinate a meeting like that. With that we turned south, jumped off the expressway at Palmers Rd to Freemans Waterhole and rode the traffic free back roads that twist and wind around the freeway then up Yarramalong Valley and in on the Old Rd. It was so nice to be on good twisties with good tarmac.

One of the biggest problrms with riding on many rural back roads is that the councils have to maintain them with a lower budget and that means patchwork, along with gravel in corners, potholes, sticks, wildlife, fourwheel drives, trucks... all of which can make make your lines hairy at times. Despite this I'm always on the lookout for a back road alternative to the highway.

After a day in town on the Gilera Runner it was an early start back on the Bonnie and off to Road Warriors for an excellent bacon n egg roll and coffee before hitting the highway.

Beautiful spring day, not a cloud in the sky, it was head down and butt up. Refueled at Bulahdelah, kicked off for a quick run allong the old Woottan Way. Stopped for a very good burger and coffee at Johns River, then jumped off the Hwy again at Herrons Creek south of Wauchope  and took backroads that Id learned from the local Ulyssians to 25ks south of Kempsey. I'd made good time so I decided to explore a valley called Rollands Plains. Very green, pretty, with lots of fat cows. Finally got to the end of the bituman so it was about turn and back on the Hwy which is under massive reconstruction at the moment. Bulldozers, diggers, trucks, kilometre after kilometre of heavy machinary stretching from Port Macquarie to Macksville, moving mountains, massive, and its mainly 80K/h roadworks.

Finally got in, sunburned, ears ringing, a stiff bum and a big tired grin. Great ride.

Oh and the bonnie got whatever *** had been in the carbs and ran true all the way home. Its going to get a 75k k service soon.

For the 50 odd riders it turned out a stunning ride and a great way to escape the Sydney heat. Once up in the mountains, it was an ideal 22 deg amid the fantastic roads and scenery on the way to Oberon via Lithgow.

I rode out to Oberon by way of Bathurst last Autumn before the snows then, I was just going to go out to Cowra from Canberra but kept riding all the way to Katoomba, those Blue Mountains look amazing, rode home on the Hume in the dark, twas a memorable journey.

Re: Sydney We Ride Coz We Can: Another squirt up the Oxley

Eccles came up for a few days to check out the new club house and it was great to see his smiling face. He had done a quick blat up to Gingers Creek the day before so yesterday we decided to do a mid week loop up the Oxley and Waterfall Way via Armidale. It was hot in the morning 30+C and after some shopping for gortex at the BMW dealer at Port Macquarie we fueled up and headed west. Had a beautiful run up to Gingers Creek with little traffic, stopped to wipe the grins and bugs of our faces then continued up and over onto the New England run into Walcha. 160ks of nivana. We swapped bikes for the run along the top and I took the Silver Space Ship. Its far bigger than any of my beasties but it was very easy to ride and has this fantastic slipstream from the big faring plus the seemingly endless power. At one stage I wound it out to 200k/h and it didnt feel faster than 140. Quickly backed off because of the insanity of it but I could feel the the big bird was still winding out. It really was ideal for roads like these, but I still love my light and nimble F800R, even if I have to wear the bugs.

Because of our late start and the shopping detour we decided, after a great burger at the Royal Cafe in Walcha that the big loop wasnt really an option for today so at 3pm we turned around, refueled and retraced our steps back down the coast. A cooler change had set in and the temp had dropped to 14C as we headed back down the mountain. Stop me if I've said this already but the Oxley is one of the most sensational roads I've had the pleasure of riding. 160 ks of spectacular scenary, great surface, and endless twisties. It really is a must ride, for either bike or scooter. Got in at dusk 500+ks all up.

Oh and we saw a Burgman at Gingers and again at Walcha, so there's the scooter.

Eccles set off back to Sydney this morning as the rain started. Thanks for the visit matey. Have a safe trip home.
