Beeping at fellow scooters- Make it a rule! (Love of scooter!)

Hi all,I've just got my first scooter few months back. It’s a bolwell Jolie 50cc, and I am absolutely in love with it. With summer here, more and more scooter are showing up around the place here in Adelaide, and am sure ever else as well. Riding along the coast earlier today, i had few fellow scooters coming from other directions, and since I was high (From the joy of riding my scooter!), I beeped each time and always got nice reply (BEEP! BEEP!).

Personally... I see riding a scooter as a passion. It’s nothing like a car or typical motorbike. I ride it, cause I love it, and I would even take a longer road home, just to be on it a bit longer. Some might think (including my own girl friend!) that its very nerdy, and I should get over it… but … man oh man…. am in love with the jolie. A ride with her always make the day much better (unlike the girlfriend!   lol (if you get it, am just kidding... please don’t get offended!))

So I was thinking... let make it a general rule that whenever you see fellow scooter rider, to give them a beep. Its like saying "oi... you loving it too or what?!"

Rule of thumb, it is a nod to other 2 wheeled enthusiasts.  Beeps work too, but when I travel past someone at some speed that cannot be typed here, visual is the only form of acknowledgment.

Heads up and give the nod!

P.S. glad you are enjoying the Jolie, I had one and they are a great scoot and I miss her.  A tonne of fun Big Smile

It's great you love riding your scooter but I think expressing your joy by beeping is not the best way to go. There is already enough pollution in our cities, including noise pollution. We shouldn't add to it. Also, the horn is meant to alert others to a potentially dangerous/important situations, so it shouldn't be used for no good reason.

Finally, there is already an established tradition between two-wheel users of nodding at each other. Admittedly used mainly by bike riders but scooters are also two-wheel vehicles so there's no reason why you shouldn't join in :)

Nothing like giving a nod and getting one in return - you'll probably find that you get a better 'hit-rate' from bikes rather than scooters but when someone does return the love it makes your day. Big Smile

A common practice is also to raise your right hand slightly, so that the fingers are in the air, while the palm stays on the throttle.

I find I get far more response to that, than nodding which is often harder to detect.

Beeping will only attract the cagers, and the ones that do pay attention to maybe think they have done something wrong (high percentage they did hehe)

I have tried to toot to salute, but it makes the whole street jump and the other scooterists cry.... Airhorns are only good for the park inspector greeting I think. Big Smile

Plus beeping without due cause is illegal. Sorry to be a kill-joy.Embarrassed

I'm surprised Kiwiscoota hasn't come up with that one. He's usually the one with the laws of the road at his fingertips.Smile

hehe - I'm not sure that it counts on most scooters as the only person who can hear the horn is the rider.  UNles you've done a Doz and fitted a Stebel of course.

One quick question - is there a law about using a horn after a certain time of night?  In the UK it's illegal after 11PM (I think).

They hear the horn, the just chose to ignore it.

I have found it's better to give short blasts beep beep, than one long beeeeeeeeeeep

Probably I ignored the legality question as I was not 100% certain,  I had a feeling it might be illegal.....
