Re: CO2 Inflator Kit for flat tyres

This is the kit that I've got from MCAS:  http://www.mcas.com.au/_product.php?section=1&prodid=5040 (sorry I haven't worked out how to post pictures yet).

It's similar in that it has the CO2 inflators, with the addition of a tyre puncture repair kit for tubeless and tubed tyres.  It also has a small hand pump that the CO2 goes into and if you don't have enough CO2, can use the hand pump on its own.  The whole kit comes in a small padded case that zips up.

I've used the tyre puncture kit and this particular kit has a 3 CO2 cartridges.  I used 1 cartridge for my 12" tyre on my VS125, and topped up with the hand pump...very handy.

The only problem with the inflator kit above is the absence of a tyre repair kit. If you've got a puncture, you need something to repair it with then use these cartridges to inflate the tyre.  Does this come with a repair kit?

I have been thinking, and thinking, and thinking about getting a repair kit but it is just another one of those things I have not gotten around to.

The kit from MCAS looks pretty good.  I am just runing out of room under the seat to store stuff Sad

You'd be surprised at how little room it takes under the seat.

I've had one puncture in the 4 months that I've owned my VS125, which isn't good compared to one puncture in 20 years of driving a cage.  I was thankful that I had the repair kit which allowed me to ride.

Oh, and if you have an old tire lying around, have a couple of practice runs at using the reaming tool and plug the hole - I had the luxury of not being in a rush, I was at my in-laws', it was broad daylight and I could read the instructions when I used the kit for the first time.  I'd hate to be trying to repair a puncture for the first time ever, in the dark, in rain and on the side of the road somewhere.

Might salvage my old tire when it's time for a change so I can practice some more.

We have been useing these for a while  for cycling, mountain biking mainly. I have tubeless tyers on my mountain bike and use a latex type of goupe sealent ( there's a couple of brands out there) with great success, when you get a small punture the sealent simply fills the hole, and the co2 makes it increadably easy to top up the preassure.

does anyone use sealent in there scooter tyers?

The "Stan's no-tubes" stuff you're running in the pushie Matt, doesn't suit scoots or any fast moving vehicle. Gets out of balance and gets too hot...

This is a new product from America which should stop all punctures, this was shown on Access 31 a Community TV channel  a couple of week ago and is guaranteed not to unbalance your wheel and it also cool your tyres and will give up to 25% longer wear.http://www.youtube.com/results?q=ridingwa&search_type=&search=Search#  Go to episode 6 Part 1 of Riding WA, also go to episode 2 part 3 and you will see our now famous steve@ace in action on an MP3

Didn't state anywhere at the listing about repair kit. The MCAS kit you recommended looks awesome, I might just get it a little bit down the road for longer trips. Now I have paid roadside assist within Metropolitan areas, might as well use them if anything happens Smile

Thanks for the heads up, i was considering puting some in, only a 50cc, we easily do up round 60k an hour, but never for extended periods of time on the pushie, but still dont suffer any balance problems( in the wheels that is). I will have a closer look on the container of the ones in the auto shops.

You guys make me laugh too

I've got NRMA membership also, but my understanding is that they'll only arrange for my scooter to be taken to my house or the nearest repair place within a set radius in metropolitan Sydney.  They won't change or fix the tire for me, so I'm still stuffed.  I'm saving that one for when I can't fix the puncture like a sidewall puncture.

Happy to be corrected if I'm wrong!

Honestly I don't know, common sense tells me the roadside assist will tow it to the mechanic of my choice for a new tyre, no?  Tongue Tied Fixing a punctured tyre is just a temporary measure to ride to a mechanic (or home) isn't it? Um...somehow I have that impression when it's a two wheel vehicle, both wheels better be at it's best condition for road safety. Is it safe to continue using a patched tyre? Will anyone enlighten?

Re: CO2 Inflator Kit for flat tyres

Yes they should tow you to your preferred repairer, unless your membership restricts you to a certain radius.  My membership is for a 20km radius so if I'm 50km away from home, I get a free tow for 20km then have to pay for the rest of the way.  NRMA won't change my tire for me because I don't carry a spare (Indifferent) or fix the puncture - that's a DIY job.

My issue with the free tow is the timing and cost.  What do you do if it's a week night, Saturday night or Sunday when you get your flat tire?  Even if you get your scooter towed to the repairer, you'll have to leave it there overnight until they open the next day.  I was lucky with my puncture because it was in the middle of the tread and could be repaired with a plug.   If I get the scooter towed home via NRMA, I can't call them out the next day to tow me to the scooter shop for free.  They treat that as part of the original tow, and I have to pay for the tow.  So, all up, I'd rather plug the tire if I can, ride it home so I don't worry about leaving it outside the scooter shop and ride it there the next day when they're open.

My understanding is that the puncture repair kit is meant to be temporary only and is to get you to a repairer.  Having said that, the plug that I used was good enough to last a week until I could get the tire repaired....and I've heard of people riding thousands of kms until the tire needed repairing.  It's really the inspection of the tire inside which is important....you don't know if there's a tear that'll get worse inside the tire even if you plugged it.  The repairer will fit a permanent plug from the inside of the tire and it should be safe.  If not, you're up for a new tire.  I think legally, you can only have 2 plugs (temporary or professionally fitted)....after that, time for a new tire.  If it's a sidewall puncture, again, it's time for a new tire....you can't plug those.
