Going to buy scooter....what do I buy?

Hey, I'm in Canberra, and am going to buy my first scooter soon. Budget for the actual machine is $2000-$3000, preferably 100+cc, what do I buy?

    Kms in each trip?

    Speed of roads?

    Retro or sporty styling?

Does your budget include your safety gear, on road costs etc?

12-odd km commute to uni, 50-80km (mainly 60km), don't much care about the style. i've got a separate $1000-ish planned for gear, orc, licensing, insurance etc.

So I am assuming by wanting a 100, you are licenced.

Just to geta  feel of what is available go to the Scooter Sales section of this site, and have a look around.  www.scootersales.com.au You will then get a feel of what you like in looks, and can at least narrow it down a little.

I'm about 160cm tall. Am a fairly big girl too. Haven't got a license yet, but I will have to as I'm in the ACT, so might as well be able to higher than 50kmph. Commute usage mostly.

Also, I'm not much fussed on how it looks, more efficiency, reliability etc.

Hey Bec, welcome to the forum! I'm in Canberra too & have been scooting for just over 6 mths now. Did the pre-learner course with Stay Upright - extremely useful, though a little too focussed on geared bikes. Have subsequently done a one hour private lesson & the excellent Scooter Skills course, but all of that is probably a ways off for you yet.

Both of the local scooter shops are listed on scooter sales (Moto Central and Motorini). Both are open weekdays and Saturdays til mid afternoon. Some of the bike shops also sell scoots, but don't know what their after sales service would be like. CMC have Yamaha & Honda, Joe's also do Yamaha, though both of these brands are probably out of your price range. These dealers often have second-hand scoots.

Having been riding for a while, I would aim for minimum 125cc, given a lot of roads are 70-80kph, which you don't realise until you're riding around all the time. Someone else here at the forums complained that he'd bought a 100cc & within a few weeks had found it inadequate for getting around town. You will be less limited if you get something 125cc or above (though I know a gal at work with a 100cc Aerox & hers gets her around in 80-90 zones no problem, as I imagine something like a Bee Wee would too).

Good luck with your licence and scoot shopping & hope to see you on two wheels soon. PP

Proud owner of a beautiful blue Derbi Rambla, still not sold on a name... Need suggestions!

You will need to get around & have a look at a few different ones. I've found the more voluptuous need to look out for not only seat height but seat shape & "cut outs" on the floor boards. Means the riders legs aren't splayed so scoots with taller seat heights are an option.

In the price range 2,000 to 3,000 it's going to be Chinese which is entry level. Another 1,000 will get you onto a much better quality scoot if you can up the budget there are some really good options like Piaggio Fly/Derbi Boulevard, Aprilia Sportcity One, & SYM Mio which are great for shorter riders.

ok...thanks. I like that..."more voluptuous". What do people think of the SYM Orbit 125? As a girl, all the technical stats mean nothing to me, but the price seems good.

Another cheap scooter. Check Piaggio Zip 100 also. Cut outs on the floor boards are shaped to allow your legs closer into the centre line of the scooter. If you look at the picture below the floor board is narrower where your legs hang down. It's like an hour glass shape -wider at the front & back than the middle. Means the inside of your legs don't hit the floor boards & you don't get bruises.

When you start sitting on a few, you will realise how important this can be for the height challenged (I am one).

Both the Orbit 125, Piaggio Fly (Derbi Bolulavard is identical in looks), will suit you.  But the best advice is to sit on as many as possible, and see what suits you best, as you will be the one riding it, you need to be confident in that you feel safe on the scooter.
